Rift update 1.8 will introduce new tool to warn players when they’re out of sensor range

Oculus has plans to introduce its own take on the SteamVR Chaperone system with the next update to its pioneering Rift virtual reality holiday.

Chaperone enables devs to let players know when their HTC Vive wands are approaching the edge of the device’s sensor range, thus limiting their ability to control VR games, but so far Oculus Rift has not had a similar system for its Touch controllers.

Now Oculus has announced it will introduce Guardian, its own take on the system, with the upcoming 1.8 update to the Rift, GamaSutra reports.

The tech was revealed by the firm’s VP Nate Mitchell, and will be detailed further at the Oculus Connect event in San Jose next month.

The company does face potential problems as Valve’s patent for Chaperone covers “sensory feedback systems and method for guiding users in virtual reality environments”. It will be interesting to see how Oculus have avoided this.
