Hulu To Add New Content On Its VR App This Fall
September 26, 2016

Hulu already offers a VR app that lets you can watch regular videos in a virtual home theater and explore immersive 360-degree videos. Now the company is taking a big step forward with two original VR programs set to launch this fall.

Variety reports that Hulu is set to offer a news program called The Big Picture: News in Virtual Reality, with new episodes uploaded every other week. It’s also premiering Virtually Mike and Nora, a comedy series that promises to break the barrier between audience and performers. Both shows will be produced by RYOT, a media company focused on immersive videos.

The Big Picture will focus on stories with a large visual scale that fit naturally with virtual reality. An early episode will show the Dadaab refugee camp in Northern Kenya, which houses over 300,000 people. “This is a news show that’s really built to the VR headset,” RYOT co-founder Bryn Mooser told Variety. “It’s truly the first of its kind.”

The comedy series stars Saturday Night Live actor and writer Mike O’Brien alongside Nora Kirkpatrick, best known for her roles in The Office and Greek. The show will also explore its 360-degree format in new ways by incorporating the viewer into the story.

Both shows are set to start this year, but Hulu hasn’t said exactly when they will premiere. They’ll be exclusive to the company’s VR app, which is available in the Oculus Store for Gear VR and the Rift headset.
